PIO MANZU'
Nasce a Milano nel 1939, figlio del grande scultore
Giacomo Manzł.
Conseguita la maturitą classica, nel 1959, inizia gli
studi di industrial design alla Hochschule für
Gestaltung di Ulm, dopo i quali inizia a collaborare con
la Fiat, fino ad allora poco permeabile a contributi
culturali esterni.
In parallelo continua la sua attivitą ad Ulm, come
assistente, e inizia a collaborare con riviste
specializzate («Form», «Style Auto», «4Roads», «Marcatré»,
e a giornali («Il Corriere della Sera»): tema di base il
design automobilistico, sul quale teorizza ma
innanzitutto opera.
Nel 1964 progetta, dopo la tesi di laurea su «Design di
un trattore di 80 cv», una vettura Gran Turismo 2 posti
per la NSU Werke e, l'anno seguente, una vettura
familiare Glas Autonova.
Al design per l'automobile - di cui l'esempio pił
significativo, messo in produzione, resta la Fiat 127
prima versione e la ricerca pił interessante il
prototipo di un taxi da cittą, City Taxi, in
collaborazione con il Centro Stile Fiat - Pio Manzł ha
affiancato anche interventi di product e industrial
design: la lampada Parentesi per Flos, frutto della
collaborazione con Achille Castiglioni; il Cronotime per
Ritz Italora (prodotto successivamente da Alessi) e il
Portaoggetti da scrivania per Kartell.
Al designer, prematuramente scomparso in un incidente
automobilistico all'etą di 30 anni, č stato dedicato il
Centro di Ricerche sulle strutture ambientali di
Verrucchio (Rn), alla cui progettazione aveva
collaborato.
Non solo designer, Pio Manzł si č inoltre servito del
mezzo fotografico quale strumento di ricerca e di
studio. |

PIO MANZU'
Born in Milan in 1939, son of the great italian sculptor
Giacomo Manzł.
After achieving the classical maturity in 1959, he
begins his studies in industrial design at the
Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm (Germany), and later he
starts to collaborate with FIAT.
At the same time he keeps on learning as assistant at
the school in Ulm, and begins to collaborate with
specialized magazine (such as «Form», «Style Auto»,
«4Roads», «Marcatré», and newspapers («Il Corriere della
Sera»).
In 1964 he plans, after his thesis concerning «Design of
a tractor of 80 cv», a Gran Turismo car for NSU Werke
and, the following year, the family car Glas Autonova.
Besides the car design - of which the most famous
example are the first version of Fiat 127 and the
prototype of the City Taxi - Pio Manzł has realized many
objects for big firms such as the Parentesi light for
Flos, together with Achille Castiglioni; the Cronotime
for Ritz Italora (later produced by Alessi) and the Desk
tidy for Kartell.
To the designer, who died in an auto accident when he
was just 30, has been dedicated The Pio Manzł
International Research Centre in Verrucchio (Rimini), to
whose planning he had collaborated.
Not only designer, Pio Manzł has used photography as
tool of research and study. |
